Another successful GBVF campaign in Kanana.

The roll out of Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBV&F) awareness campaigns continues to gain momentum in different parts of the province. The department of Community Safety and Transport Management (DCSTM) reaches out to many communities including townships and even the most remote villages.

In it’s roll out of the campaign, stakeholders are coordinated to engage robustly with the public on crime related issues and most importantly to bring forth solutions.

In many instances, the violation and victimisation of the most vulnerable groups often thrive in an environment where substance abuse and crime is rampant.

The Director of Crime Prevention Partnerships, Ms Florence Nchoe says these campaigns are geared towards service delivery through the District Development Model (DDM).

“In order to increase the impact of services we deliver to people, it is important that no community falls behind. Therefore we are guided by the District Development Model as we organise ourselves as government departments and all our stakeholders to bring services directly to our people.

“This way we speak with one voice and work together, this includes bringing communities on board in order to address crime related challenges effectively,” she said.

Kanana is a township in Orkney just outside Klerksdorp. Problematic crimes in the area include vehicle hijackings which often lead to murder incidents.

“In Kanana we have an issue of rampant car hijacking where foreign nationals are often victims in those crimes.

“However, the main issue is the lack of cooperation from our communities due to fear of victimisation. We are here to encourage people to speak out and work with the police in order to create safer communities where crime is rampant,” said Captain Modiri Mokgethi who gave the crime overview on behalf of Kanana Police Station.

The Department would like to extend gratitude to the community of Kanana for their response to the initiative as well as all stakeholders involved in the campaign which include; South African Police Service (SAPS) Kanana
Department of Social Development,
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA),
The Department of Health,
Phakama Ndoda Foundation,
The Department of Correctional Services,
South African Social Services Agency (SASSA), Faith Based Organisations (GO's)
The Matlosana Local Municipality,
The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development,
Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Kanana.
